CH. 05  ·  BACK IN OUR DAY
62 years ago today, three cosmonauts squeezed into a capsule built for one. The spacesuits stayed home.

October 12, 1964: the Soviet Union launched Voskhod 1 with three men aboard. Vladimir Komarov was the commander, Konstantin Feoktistov was an engineer, and Boris Yegorov was a doctor. The ship was a rebuilt Vostok, built to carry one pilot. Spacesuits did not fit, so the crew wore plain training suits. The flight lasted just over 24 hours. All three landed inside the capsule on October 13.

Also today: 1968, the Summer Games opened in Mexico City, over 7,000 feet up. They were the first Games held in Latin America.

A Mail Carrier Left Management to Get Back on the Route, and Her Customers Threw Her a Party
A paper cutout row of coral pink mailboxes on green posts beside a pink road winding across green hills under a cream sky

Teresa Fledderman is a rural mail carrier at the Sunman Post Office in Indiana. The post office hired her in 1997. She retires on December 31, after nearly 30 years.

From 2010 to 2016, she worked in management at four post offices: New Trenton, Cedar Grove, Milan and Osgood. Then she chose to go back to carrying mail.

Recently, her route held a party for her in Sunman Community Park. After she retires, she plans to volunteer and help her daughter’s nutrition business. She told 812NOW.COM, “I didn’t want to just deliver their mail, I want to know who they are.”

Keep smiling,
