CH. 01  ·  ABSURD BUT TRUE

A former British paratrooper has walked 30,000 miles through 29 countries since leaving Chile in 1998. At the English Channel, he asked to walk through the tunnel. The answer was no. He swam.

CH. 02  ·  HEADLINE JOKES
Pepsi put Vanilla & Cream cola on shelves Monday.

It comes in 12-packs. That is twelve chances to regret the first can.

Discovery+ raised its prices by $1 and $2 a month.

Streaming was supposed to replace the cable bill. It replaced the cable, not the bill.

Apple will hold an event called “Pro and tell” on October 28.

Show and tell for grown-ups. The tell is the price tag.

Sandisk is the exclusive storage partner for Meta’s new VR glasses.

Your junk drawer already has four. Each is full of vacation photos.

CH. 03  ·  BAD JOKE

The dinner at a certain boarding house was so bad that the old dog on the porch howled whenever the bell rang. One boarder listened for a week, then walked over.

“What are you howling for, old fellow? You do not have to eat it.”

— from More Toasts, 1922. Got one worse than that? Hit reply.

CH. 04  ·  FUNNY PICTURE

The brochure said tropical. The donkey would like a word.

Seen something funnier? Reply with a picture you took — a dog in a hat, a sign gone wrong, whatever made you laugh this week.

CH. 05  ·  BACK IN OUR DAY
53 years ago today, a $7 million opera house opened. It cost $102 million.

October 20, 1973: Queen Elizabeth II opened the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Builders began in 1959, expecting four years of work and a $7 million bill. The job took 14 years and cost $102 million, more than 14 times the estimate. Today it hosts about 3,000 events a year.

Also today: same date, 1962. “Monster Mash” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bobby Pickett sang it as an impression of the horror actor Boris Karloff. The BBC banned it that year as “too morbid.” A 1973 re-release climbed back to No. 10 in the United States.

D) Fairlane

Answer’s at the very bottom. Try it first. 👀

CH. 07  ·  GOOD NEWS
A 99-Year-Old Former Nurse Is Now the World’s Oldest Wing-Walker
A paper cutout red biplane flying over green and mustard hills under a soft pink and cream sky

Helga Duffy is 99 and spent most of her life as a nurse. This month she rode on the wing of a small biplane in Gloucestershire, England, strapped on in the open air. Guinness World Records named her the oldest wing-walker in the world.

A 97-year-old wing-walker had set a record in August. Duffy’s niece saw that news and wondered if her aunt could try. The staff at her care home in Devizes agreed. She had a bad right knee and went anyway.

The flight raised more than £1,600 (about $2,000) for an air ambulance charity. Duffy’s motto is to try anything, because you cannot know what you can do until you have tried.

Keep smiling,
